Worlds Apart: Exploring Separation and Renewal
Worlds Apart was painted as part of the Gold Series that I began to work on towards the end of 2021. I wanted to explore using the crackle paste and loved the effect it provided. Having been thinking recently about different global political situations and disputes, as well as the recent Volcano eruption in the Tonga, I thought it was a perfect name for my new artwork, whose cracks depict separation and creation of something new from beneath the painting.
The use of crackle paste in this piece creates a visually striking effect, with the intricate web of cracks running across the canvas. This technique not only adds depth and texture to the work, but also serves as a metaphor for the divisions and rifts that can occur in our world. The cracks represent the separation between different ideologies, cultures, and nations, while also suggesting the potential for renewal and transformation that can arise from these fractures.
The gold tones that dominate the painting further enhance this sense of duality, with the warm hues evoking a sense of richness and opulence, while the cracks disrupt the smooth surface, creating a sense of tension and unease. This juxtaposition of the precious and the fractured reflects the complex and often contradictory nature of our global landscape, where moments of beauty and harmony can coexist with conflict and upheaval.
Ultimately, Worlds Apart invites the viewer to contemplate the fragility and resilience of our interconnected world, and to consider the ways in which separation and renewal are inextricably linked. Through the use of bold, expressive brushstrokes and a masterful application of the crackle paste, this work stands as a powerful testament to the artist's skill and vision.
